Is God Evil?

Many people believe that inaction is morally equivalent to committing an evil yourself. If it is within your ability to help others at little to no cost to yourself, is not helping immoral? If this is true, then any supreme being that exists must be evil, as it is condoning all of the atrocities that go on in the world. The Greek philosopher Epicurus originally posited this argument:

“Is God willing to prevent evil, but not able?
Then he is not omnipotent.
Is he able, but not willing?
Then he is malevolent.
Is he both able and willing?
Then whence cometh evil?
Is he neither able nor willing?
Then why call him God?”

So, is inaction morally equivalent to committing an evil act yourself? Does this mean that God is evil?

Creationisn

If God created Adam and Eve, and then they had Cain and Abel, where did the wife of Cain come from? How did they produce the human race if there were only three of them to begin with?

Death Penalty

Is is it ethical to give a child the death penalty if that child has killed an ungodly amount of people?

Pretend...

Is pretending a trait of weakness? Or an advantage?

Justified Actions

Do you think that a person with a mental disability should be punished for murdering another person? If no then does that mean that he is not a person? If so what is a person?

Materialistic Love

Why do we love objects so much? For example: If we lose our phones or iPods or laptops, we freak out because you become so attached to them, even if they are incapable of showing a person the same affection. Is it possible for humans to love each other just the same, love without being loved back?

What If...?

What if you could see the future?

If you had the ability to see the future, how would you use this power? Could this power be used for good or evil? If you didn't like how your future looked would you change it even if it affected the people around you?

Are our lifes predetermined Or is it destined by faith ?

Through out life each individual has to overcome hard challenges and obstacle in order to prepare them self for the real world. Sometime these challenges shape our life and our future, Do you believe that our life's are already predetermined or is it destined out by faith?

We all have a reason don't we? How do we know it's the right one?

People always say we're here on earth for a reason, there's a purpose to life.. What is that purpose? Why exactly are we here? And how do we know were making the right choice?

Somewhere ages and ages hence:
Two roads diverged in a wood, and I--
I took the one less traveled by,
And that has made all the difference.

~Robert Frost

What Gives us Free Will?

Assume you are an atheist.

If mankind does indeed have free will, where does it come from?
If an object has a force exerted on it, it will move. If an animal becomes hungry, it will seek food. If something hurts a person, they will avoid it. Everything in the universe has a cause, and an effect. Our actions are no different.

So, if we do have free will, where does it come from? What lets us break the cycle of cause and effect?

The power of reality.

What if one day you woke up with the power to shape reality however you saw fit? What would you do first? Is it even morally right for somone to alter reality? Is this power too much for one person to wield or would it eventually corrupt?

Soul?

Is our soul still in reality even though we're dead, or has it gone to a different world?

Reality or Illusion

If you knew the Truth of the world, would you choose Reality or illusion?

Why...?

Why is there poverty and suffering in the world?

Good or Evil ?

Do you believe that people are born good or evil? Or do they develop these traits as they mature?

Religious Practise

Is it neccessary to practise a religion? can't one believe in God and live righteously/virtously without having to go to church/mosque/synagogue etc. and without prayer and fasting? or should we have to choose a religion (if we believe in a Supreme Being) and follow all the practices that accompany the religion? Does an Athiest have to live a moral life? Why?

Aliyah's Question!

Can you really believe in something that you have not observed yourself? How can we believe in God if we have never seen him ?

Shenese's question

How old would you be if you didn’t know how old you are?

Do we have free will or are our lives pre-determined for us?

Are we living on this Earth with free will or are our lives planned out for us? If our lives are planned out, would it make sense that criminals are innocent since their actions have already been written?

Thursday's Overheads

Determinism

The Challenge of Determinism

Ø Free will is the ability to make one choice over another.
Ø Free will is necessary to judge morality.
Ø If someone was forced to do evil or drugged etc. then you would judge their morality differently.
Ø If there is no free will (if the individual cannot truly choose their own actions) than there can be no right or wrong, no morality.

Two Types of Determinism

1.    Hard Determinism
Ø All things and choices are determined by external factors, factors outside the individual.
Ø The circumstances of your birth, your family, your education, your upbringing, your genetics, etc. will determine your actions throughout life.
Ø The hard determinist can say that murder or theft is bad, be he/she cannot judge or punish those who commit the crime, because they are not truly responsible à They did not have free will to choose to do otherwise.

2.    Soft Determinism
Ø All choices are determined by our attitudes, desires or inclinations (our character).
Ø You CAN judge morality, but people should only be responsible for actions that reflect their character.
Ø For example: If I have an arm spasm and hit you it is not my fault.
o   If I hit you because you annoy me and that is how I deal with it, than IT is my fault.

Dream or No Dream

When we dream we sometimes know it, but other times we don't. We try to recall the same dream but can't seem to do it. We draw blanks in our mind, could it be that our unconscious and conscious mind have been  flipped when asleep, so when we are asleep we are really awake but when awake we are asleep dreaming?

SILENCE = Emptiness or Kinship?

David Tyson Gentry once said: “True friendship comes when silence between two people is comfortable.”

Hence, in essence of friendship or related relationship, do friends need language for their thoughts?

OR

Using their sense of perception and memory of each other, friends should be able to read each others’ thoughts?

Omar's question

Is it our governments job to lockup criminals in overcrowded, costly prisons or should our government steer more into the direction of, rehabilitating them into becoming productive members of society so they do not re-offend?

Hanan's Question

Are humans naturally born gay or adopt it?

Choice or force?

Why do people want to choose the "right" thing for us? Is it force?

Existentialism Board Note

Existentialism

Existentialism: A philosophical movement that focuses on individual autonomy and the necessity of making reasoned decisions for oneself.

Ø     Rooted in the 19th century, existentialism is a philosophical movement that became prominent in the 20th century and remains an important force at the beginning of the 21st century.
Ø     Existentialists concern themselves with human existence: the problems humans face and the place of humans in the universe.
Ø     The issues of despair, depression, anxiety, meaninglessness, and nothingness recur in existentialist writing.
Ø     In philosopher Soren Kierkegaard’s world, happiness and self-fulfillment are out of the question. Life is simply not conducive to pleasure and happiness.
o       Resisting existential angst is futile. Angst is a permanent, universal feature of modern humanity.
o       Because of this bleak vision, existentialists are often described as pessimistic and gloomy.
Ø     Philosopher Jean-Paul Sartre did not agree that existentialism emphasized the darker side of human life.
o       He suggested that those who accused the movement of being too gloomy were frightened by existentialism’s emphasis on freedom and choice.
o       Man will do nothing unless he has first understood that he must count on no one but himself; that he is alone, abandoned on earth in the midst of his infinite responsibilities; without help, with no other aim than the one sets himself, with no other destiny than the one he forges for himself on this earth.” – Jean-Paul Sartre
o       Why are people alone? Because God does not exist.
o       Every person is “condemned to be free”.

Whose control is it anyway?

Hi Class,

With consideration made to the philosophical field of Metaphysics, I pose the following:

What is personal control?

Moreover, who has more personal control, a drug addict or an individual deemed clinically insane?
