I believe that marijuana should stay illegal because it causes health problems to the person using it and social problems to the people around them. Children and parents, husbands and wives, friends and many more have been affected by drugs just because one person in their lives used it. A lot of lives were destroyed because of drug abuse so it should continue to stay illegal or even make the law regarding it more strict.
Adrian Calizto said... I OBJECT! Ganja should NOT be illiegal! The only study that states it causes health problems was done on monkeys and that is only because they choked them with pot gas masks. Marjuana would not be used for medicinal purposes, if doctors truly thought it was in any way harmful. Weed is just a plant, it is impossible to get physicaly dependent on it. Anyone can stop doing dope at any time. Anyone who "destroys" lives because they went crazy of a plant is a loser and would have just done the same thing with: hambergers, poker, scratch n sniff cards etc. I could abuse a fork by stabing eyes with it, does that mean forks should be illegal? Plus their is blood in the streets because it is illegal and criminals are able to make alot of money off it. If weed was legal the govermont could use it to put alot of money in the economy.
You make a great argument although you have left out a few facts. First of all, marajuana can be harmful in ways of learning and memory. It wears off in a few days or weeks at most but what if someone wss smoking it every day? And people can be addicted to it after using it that long. This is being done all for what? To feel pleasure? In my opinion, that is wrong because you show that you prefer a fake happiness rather than a more real world, like the prisoners in the "Allegory of the Cave"; that would be like refusing Enlightment and letting the shadows take over. Also, I disagree about the government using it to create money for their economy. Why should they take advantage of people in that way when it is known that it will lead to more crimes circulating around weed to the point people who might not be able to afford it killing others for it? Isn't that also morally wrong? Knowing that this object will lead people astray and even if it became legal more teens would use it.. What's the point of life if everyone is going to get "high"?
People are already making alot of monery off of legal drugs like: coffee, booze and tabacoo. Ya smoking weed every day can be harmful but, no drug is ment to be used everyday. It is a hell of a lot better then doing any other drug everyday though. When somebody does too much of any other drug they die. When somebody does too much ganja they get really happy, really hungry and then they take a nap. No body has ever died from doing pot in the history of man, making it the safest drug out there. Even getting addicted to chocolate and eating too much will be more harmful. I have never heard a case of someone who wanted to get high then killed for some pot. When a pot head can't afford a fix they get a job or just start selling weed. If dope was legal selling it would just improve his life instead of getting him into jail. Weed does not produce "fake happiness" because it does not make you halucenate. It simply makes you enjoy the little things in life more. I never smoked a joint and got instantly happy for no reason. I would just started noticing things around me which i would normally overlook and smile. There is nothing fake about that kind of happiness. All the crimes circulated around weed only exist because it is illegal. Criminals also want it to stay illegal and become more strict, isn't it morally wrong to give criminals exactly what they want. On top of that if somone wants to get high they are forced to deal with the very same criminals isn't it better if they could get high in a safe enviroment. The majority of canadians are getting high off some kind of drug anyway and life still has a point. Ganja also makes people question and as we are all learning questioning leads to enlightenment.
It's not supposed to be used everyday but addicts do use it like that because they don't think they can't make it through the day without it, physically and psychologically. Marijuana has health effects like causing burning and stinging of the mouth and throat, four times higher in the risk of heart attack within the first hour of smoking, weakens the immune system, etc. People can die from some of those things so marijuana can cause death indirectly. In addition, why would you want help reaching happiness through it? Wouldn't you have to be dependent on it every time then? Also, the money issue where they end up getting a job in order to pay for their fix? Less likely to happen. And even if they did sell marijuana, they could be involved in street violence circulating around it and ,for example, get shot for it. Furthermore, what you said about all crimes circulating weed because it is illegal is not true. It's almost the same as any other crime that happens because of addiction to drugs, even legal ones like alcohol, only more under the radar. Also, who said it was morally wrong to give criminals what they want if you want it too? It's even better because the criminal will resent you less and you both get want you want. Isn't that better than one side ending up in control over the other which sounds more morally wrong? And as for the majority of Canadians living on drugs, I'm against that as well. Any drug that causes a high, basically. Even though you think it is not fake happiness and makes you appreciate life, most people don't think that way. When they smoke marijuana, it's mostly because they want to get away from their reality for a while. If that's not a fake reality, then I don't know what is. Besides that, how does weed make people question when it's only supposed to get them "high"?
Weed makes people notice things that they would normally overlook and this careful examination leads to questioning. During the time of the vietnam war people were smoking the herb started questioning the war, so Nixon made the laws more strict to send them to jail. Getting high is a victimless crime. Destroying a young persons life just because they smoked a joint is wrong. Giving criminals what they want must be wrong because what they want is to make alot of money off of selling ganja. Criminals will use this money to commit bigger crimes like robbing a bank or doing some man slaughter. All the health problems you described does not come from the actual plant, but from smoking it with a flame. There are better ways like a using a vaporizer, cooking with it or making a smoothie. Selling weed only leads to street circulated crimes because it is illegal. In amsterdam selling weed is just as safe as working at mcdonalds. Cancer researchers have learned that smoking the herb slows down tumor growth in the lungs. Not only cancer but it also helps with: seizures, migraines, glaucoma, and multiple sclerosis. What is real happiness anyway? If you eat a box of oreos and smile is that fake happiness because your on a sugar high? Should people stop eating candy because it gives you the illusion of happieness?
They probably just questioned the war because they were "high", "happy" and probably forgot why they were fighting in the first place. Also, that young person destroyed their own life because they knew the consequences and yet still chose to smoke it. By the way, I thought you meant something different when you said that criminals agree with the ban. I thought you meant the ones in prison. If your reason is because more people want to buy weed if you ban it, then we'll have to be more strict in our laws so that no weed can be sold in the country without the seller facing even more consequences than a person who just smokes marijuana. To add to that, that would be even worse because people can go to Amsterdam and come back so that they feel addicted to the drug and start looking for it or import it from other places, which would soon start the crimes circulating it because then everyone would want the limited amount but might not have the means to get it and the person would have trouble circulating around them as well. People who smoke marijuana can increase their rates to have psychological disorders like anxiety, depression, and schizophrenia. Is having a healthy body physically worth destroying it mentally? Plus, who said eating a box of Oreos and then getting happy about it isn't fake? It's fake as well, and I don't believe that you can get true happiness from that. Even though that is the case, people don't have to give up candy if they don't think about it like that. It depends on your perspective. For example, I love mint candy not because it makes me "happy" but because it tastes sweet and unique. Also, it doesn't have crimes circulating around it,most people don't abuse it to the point of disease, etc. If they did, then it would probably be illegal as weed.
A very interesting topic.. Forgive me if i write too much :) Well going back to history, further than 7,000 B.C., marijuana has been completely legal and wasn’t until the 1900’s it became illegal. Due to its negative impact not only on the drug users but on the human society as whole; marijuana should stay illegal in Canada. There are many reasons why marijuana should be illegal; first, marijuana has a negative impact on youth, their behavior and their standard of mortality. If marijuana was legalized there would be many problems with youth becoming addicted to it we know it’s addictive because under the Controlled Substances Act of 1970, marijuana is classified as a Schedule I drug on the basis that is has "a high potential for abuse." There are short-term effects of marijuana and examples are increased heart rate, reduced blood pressure, trouble thinking and problem-solving, and also problems with memory; the effects on the brain are hallucinations, delusions, impaired memory, and disorientation. It can also cause effects on the heart, lungs and one study found that ‘marijuana smokers were three times more likely to develop cancer of the head or neck than non-smokers’. Second, marijuana is a gateway to harder drugs like heroin. Long-term studies of high school students and their patterns of drug use show that very few young people use other illegal drugs without first trying marijuana, using marijuana puts teens in contact with people who are users and sellers of other drugs (cocaine/heroin). So there is more of a risk that a marijuana user will be exposed to and urged to try more drugs. Lastly, if marijuana was legal there would be problems in America. Because America has strict laws about drugs, they wouldn’t associate with a country whose drug penalties are minimal. John Walters, the U.S. Drug Control Policy Director, warned that if the bill passed, the result would be increased security and lengthy delays at the border. Many problems like immigration and runaway druggies from the U.S. and efforts to secure the Canadian-U.S. border would arise. America has already responded negatively to Canada’s most recent bill regarding marijuana law reform. Legalization of Marijuana will lead to many problems. Keeping it this way is better for the society and for people who don’t want anything to do with drugs.
I feel that weed should not be illegal, if you know how to use it and not over dose then it should be legal. Because if it was illegal then there shouldn't be any kind of exception even if it's medical. If you ban it ban it all, if you're not going to ban it then make it all legal.
I personally think marijuana should continue to be illegal, it does no good for the world, it’s a waste of money and all it does is make your brain cells go up in smoke. Yes weed has been around for thousands of years but does that mean its good, it is a drug not like MDMA, cocaine or heroin (a man made and extracted drug to get you f****d up). It is a drug put here by God for people who really need it (people who have some kind of condition). It has tons of negative effects and affected many of people I know, including myself. You could say it is not a gateway drug but it is, it is usually the first drug teens try before doing heavier substances. It is easier to get than booze for teens because every high school has kids doing it and supplying, and because of it skipping class and therefore messing up their grades. Yes it could not do a thing to you if you do it occassionally but in most cases people start slow and move up because of the fact that they build up a tollerance. I agree with Sumaya it does drift the person further from reality when abused. Think about when you were a kid and people usually your elders telling you drugs are bad. Since youth kids know drugs including pot are bad you try to stay away from it but once people do try it most can’t just quit. They like the feeling of doing something bad even though they know it’s not right. They want to do it over and over because of the fact that they drift from reality and things appear more interesting, eventually people get dependent on it whether they realize it or not. There are very little people that can just try it and not like it or just stop doing it, they are lucky. If it became legal doesn’t mean people can grow it because then people would just start selling their own product, which would do the economy no good. The government would sell it very expensive and only well-off people would be able to afford it, so people would still be trafficing the stuff illegally. For example booze is legal- but only the gov. can make the stuff and sell it. I don’t think majority would want to legalize it because they don’t want their kids doing it and becoming potheads. My conclusion weed is a drug, drugs are bad. Therefore weed is bad.
I think marijuana should be legal because it barely does any harm to you, much less the community. Weed does kill brain cells and affects memory but compared to other drugs and even beverages, weed is nothing big. Since you do tend to be in another mind state while being high off of marijuana, you don’t usually disturb others. Why it is that alcohol is legal after a certain age but marijuana is completely illegal except for medical purposes. When intoxicated you are not in your right mind state as well and you tend to cause a huge scene and what not. If alcohol has a certain age limit then other drugs should too because at the end of the day you are not yourself, because you are either high off of something or drunk doing something foolish. Since they all have the same or similar outcomes they should all have the same rules.
I think marijuana should remain illegal purely on the stance that, i don't think the government needs to "rock the boat". There are medicinal uses for the drug yes but there are also adverse social affects, which will increase if we make it legal to use, without a medical reason. The current, step up seems to work fine people are going to continue to smoke it and some will be punished and others won't while some will use it for its intended purpose to help people who need it for a valid medical reason.
I agree with you Shanese, many people continually use weed and are very well aware of the consequences of their actions. If their responsible enough to use it then they are responsible for their actions under the influence of the drug. Yes, it is silly to say that its legal for some people and not all. This means its attainable for those it is not legal too. It is just a case of the goverment needing to pick a side! Legal or illegal.
I personally don't see a point to making marijuana illegal. There are so many benefits to it. Actually, Harvard University did a study and discovered that THC (the active part of marijuana) cuts the growth of lung cancer tumors in half. They say that marijuana is a gateway drug, but alcohol is legal. Isn't that even more of a gateway to worse habits? Places like California have legalized the use of marijuana and I see no problems arising over there.
It just makes no sense for the government to make marijuana illegal but make cigarettes, alcohol, salvia (which is a freaking hallucinogen) legal. People lose lives everyday to a drunk driver or from lung cancer. There has yet to be a marijuana related death.
Many people have been debating over this topic for quite some time. Based on my personal opinion i do not believe that marijuana should be legalized because of the effects it has on people. If they start legalizing marijuana they might as well legal any other drug, by legalizing it is allowing people to know that it is ohk to smoke weed as long as it can be paid for. Yes he side effects of weed are not that major compared to other drugs and yes it doesn't cause health problems as much as cigarettes does, but at the end of the day it is still a drug, whether its natural or not. I personally don't feel weed is a major concerning drug but it also isn't something that should be used heavily. People in our society are already corrupted by the influences that alcohol and cigarettes can cause we don't need another factor to bring to the equation.
Haha nice qu, I personally think marijuana should be legalized. It has it's benefits and compared to many other things out there (like zeinabmohamudd said) it doesn't make sense for it not be. Only a matter of time...
i believe that weed should be legalized because in my opinion there is no harm with it if one can smoke cigarettes then why can’t one smoke weed, see in my opinion smoking in whole is bad but if there was a choice between weed or cigarettes i would personally choose weed because both drugs are not good. Weed is just a plant and that it not much to it but cigarettes has rat poison, PVC and paint thinner chemical and most people want to die a good life not with something that has hazardous chemicals. So i leave that choice up to each person which would be better if one had to smoke cigarettes (PVC, rat poison) or weed basicaly a plant.
I for sure think the government should not be the ones to say whether or not marijuana should be illegal because they are the ones who made people scared of marijuana in the first place. The government started using the term marijuana in 1970 to make the public afraid of this supposedly exotic drug. They had advertisements out that would say that the reefer makes you drug crazed and you lose all your sexual inhibitions. Their purpose was to make people afraid of the drug that people often before the usage of marijuana referred to as cannabis or in ancient Sanskrit text “Ganja”. I believe their purpose was to make money off the cigarette companies and other drug companies. I believe this to be so because if marijuana was legalized people wouldn’t need to purchase cigarettes. They could simply grow the plant at home and get high without a worry. The drug such as Advil is taken to remove symptoms of headaches. Marijuana has calming effects which relieves headaches. It is a natural substance and there is no risk of overdose. The government knew they would lose millions of dollars in their industries if they made it legal
Everyone makes a good point, but I believe that weed should continue to be illegal. If we make weed legal then that will cause controversy, since people may want to have other drugs legal. Once one drug is legal soon enough another drugs will become legal and another and another and so on and so forth. So therefore all drugs should stay illegal (minus those used for medicinal purposes) to keep our country and cities safe from people misusing drugs and other products.
I personally would say marijuana should be illegal in some cases, for instance, medical reason should be an exception as to why it should be legalized but it should have some sort of subscription to go with it. Then again, if you really think about it, although it is illegal there is a large majority of people who still continue to do it, and to have to put charges on all of those people and assign court dates would take a whole lot of time, therefore it should be legal to have a certain amount of marijuana on you at a time, and if the police feel that the amount that a person has is a lot and much more harmful he should be able to confiscate it.
Marijuana should be illegal because it slows down the reaction of a person, when you are driving the chance of getting into an accident is high especially on the highway where u need full control of your mind. If you are high as a kite some cant control it and may pass out and some may get distracted and could cause a serious collision. Also if marijuana is legalized the government will make money off of it and the prices of other drugs may increase and others may protest for them to be legalized too.
I think it is do dumb that marijuana be illegal and smoking be legal. Both carry negative impacts, which according to scientific study, especially smoking. The government might as well banned both. Smoking collapses people's lungs, gives heart problems, breathing problems, BAD BREATH, and much more other consequences, some more severe than others. What is the soul purpose of smoking and burning marijuana, I would never understand, for I have never done either one of them, but I think keeping marijuana illegal is senseless.

ReplyDeleteI agree with you Shanese, many people continually use weed and are very well aware of the consequences of their actions. If their responsible enough to use it then they are responsible for their actions under the influence of the drug. Yes, it is silly to say that its legal for some people and not all. This means its attainable for those it is not legal too. It is just a case of the goverment needing to pick a side! Legal or illegal.
ReplyDeleteNice question.
ReplyDeleteI personally don't see a point to making marijuana illegal.
ReplyDeleteHaha nice qu, I personally think marijuana should be legalized. It has it's benefits and compared to many other things out there (like zeinabmohamudd said) it doesn't make sense for it not be. Only a matter of time...
ReplyDeletei believe that weed should be legalized because in my opinion there is no harm with it if one can smoke cigarettes then why can’t one smoke weed, see in my opinion smoking in whole is bad but if there was a choice between weed or cigarettes i would personally choose weed because both drugs are not good.
ReplyDeleteI for sure think the government should not be the ones to say whether or not marijuana should be illegal because they are the ones who made people scared of marijuana in the first place.
ReplyDeleteEveryone makes a good point, but I believe that weed should continue to be illegal.
ReplyDeleteI personally would say marijuana should be illegal in some cases, for instance, medical reason should be an exception as to why it should be legalized but it should have some sort of subscription to go with it.
ReplyDeleteMarijuana should be illegal because it slows down the reaction of a person, when you are driving the chance of getting into an accident is high especially on the highway where u need full control of your mind. If you are high as a kite some cant control it and may pass out and some may get distracted and could cause a serious collision. Also if marijuana is legalized the government will make money off of it and the prices of other drugs may increase and others may protest for them to be legalized too.
ReplyDeleteI think it is do dumb that marijuana be illegal and smoking be legal.
