When we dream we sometimes know it, but other times we don't. We try to recall the same dream but can't seem to do it. We draw blanks in our mind, could it be that our unconscious and conscious mind have been flipped when asleep, so when we are asleep we are really awake but when awake we are asleep dreaming?
That almost sounds like a rationalist's response! If you think about it that way, it can be true because you have no evidence that proves against it but then what about those really weird dreams where you're being chased by a giant teapot. Would you classify that as being awake? Also, since the dream is not remembered as much, it's more likely that we were asleep dreaming than awake because we remember most things that happens in our daily lives with more clarity.
ReplyDeleteThat is true, however there are a few people out there who do seem to remember dreams with some clarity that makes it seem like they were awake when the certain event took place.Could it be possible that we are in an even bigger dream without realizing it?
ReplyDeleteFrom reading this I'm assuming that you are asking if we think that there are two different conscious's when we are awake or asleep. (Note: asleep is not dreaming)
ReplyDeleteYes, I do believe that there are two different conscious’s because when you are asleep you have no recollection of the things that went on when you were asleep and when you are awake you are not aware of what happened when you were asleep. From this we can conclude that you have two different consciouses because you are asleep and cannot be aware of anything that has happened, except for the things you dream which are not reality. And when you are awake you know only of the things that have gone on because you are awake and aware of what is going on around you.
Looking at it that way, I would have to agree with you on the possibility that we have more than one consciousness. But thinking about Kant's theory on the consciousness and how there can only be one conscious, could that not mean that we would be aware if there was only one consciousness?
ReplyDeleteI agree that there are two conscious as well, and slip into a diff conscious state while sleeping, as opposed to a different one while you are awake. However regarding the question of "could it be that our unconscious and conscious mind have been flipped when asleep, so when we are asleep we are really awake but when awake we are asleep dreaming?" This seems completely crazy to me, and not plausible. When i am asleep i am in another conscious state, not living my actual life. When i am awake I'm in my conscious state, living my real life. It is not flipped, my dreams are just a figment of my subconscious not my reality.
ReplyDeleteWow, great question, dreams in my opinion are something that are made created by our minds, that shows us that there are many people in our life and it shows you aspects from your past or present. But dreams in my opinion occur when one is asleep and has what’s so ever no wakefulness. When we say that one is day dreaming by that we mean that one is lost not that one is actually dreaming. Dreaming and its stories have been passed down from ages and the dreams that are remembered are the one that are close to you and makes one wants to remember so it could be passed on and one could make from a dream to a memory.
ReplyDeleteI disagree with this, because there can’t be two consciousnesses, there is a conscious mind and an unconscious mind, while your asleep your unconscious mind takes control and all your dreams and nightmares are coming from your subconscious mind. Sometimes your dreams are blank but yet sometimes you can remember parts of it, and you try to fit them together like a puzzle, but maybe that’s because of all the events that take place in your life or all the things you perceive, for example: You watch a scary movie, and you have a nightmare that same night? Sometimes your brain has a lot of stuff that is repressed and stored into your unconscious part of the brain, and sometimes those memories and experiences come out through your dreams
ReplyDeleteI agree with Marissa it is crazy and not plausible for our conscious and subconscious to flip once asleep. When you are dreaming there is many times that you are aware that you are dream since your dream is so crazy and could possibly not be real. Like if you had dream you were a mermaid and such you would know once you woke up that it was a dream since mermaids do not exist. So therefore I think that our conscious and subconscious do not switch while asleep.
ReplyDeleteWhen we are asleep and dreaming, we find it difficult to determine which state is in fact conscious and which is unconscious.
ReplyDeleteAs both the mind and body seem to be alert in both states, we question which state is in fact the true reality.
When rationalizing this question, one would expect to believe that the state of consciousness, the true reality, is when we are awake and can utilize our bodies’ functions and navigate through thoughts within our minds easily.
Furthermore, the consistency found within reality evidences that the state of wakefulness is consciousness and dreams are found within a state of unconsciousness. Dreams, as they are known to be attached to our subconscious mind, often depict that which we envision occurring in our lives or thoughts we desire to be given life. In reality, this is not the case.
I would personally choose reality. As Plato projected through his “Allegory of the Caves,” when one escapes the chains of conformity (illusion in this case), they are introduced to further truth which establishes reality.
ReplyDeleteIf one kept inside their box of what is accepted by society, they would not be able to understand knowledge outside those boundaries (i.e. through revelation).
